What is irritable bowel syndrome?

Strictly speaking, irritable bowel syndrome is a diagnosis by exclusion made by a doctor. This means that sufferers experience typical symptoms of a gastrointestinal disorder, without a direct cause being identifiable.

Around a third of adults suffer from one or more symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome:

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

For some people, these symptoms become chronic and become more and more of a burden in their everyday life. The symptoms often alternate or even occur at the same time. This makes it difficult to treat the condition using conventional medicines, which generally only target one of the specific symptoms. The symptoms often become worse with stress. Suffering is usually eased following a bowel movement, but only for a limited time.

Symbioflor® 2 is an approved
probiotic drug with living bacteria.

How does Symbioflor® 2 help with irritable bowel syndrome?

Microbial therapy with Symbioflor® 2 makes use of natural intestinal bacteria whose properties we know and use in a targeted manner. The bacteria contained in Symbioflor® 2 influence specific components of the gut-associated immune system. The product stabilizes the intestinal mucosa and promotes natural composition of the intestinal flora.

The advantages of Symbioflor® 2:

  • Proven efficacy in clinical studies

  • Rapid onset of action

  • Minimal side effects

  • No preservatives

  • No alcohol

  • Individualised dosing

The aim of microbial therapy is to activate the body’s ability to heal itself and to gently encourage the body’s regulatory mechanisms. Overall there are very few irritable bowel syndrome treatments available. Symbioflor® 2 contains a high concentration of the natural intestinal bacterium E. coli. The preparation can combat the cause of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

More microorganisms live in our gut than there are cells in our body.

What is the role of the intestinal flora?

It is known that the intestinal flora in patients with irritable bowel differs from that in healthy individuals. The intestinal flora is an ecosystem composed of billions of microorganisms that colonise our gut. Along with yeasts and fungi, it is predominantly bacteria that make their home in our gut. Most bacterial species are not harmful to humans; some are even useful for us.

  • They can break down certain nutritional components and provide additional nutrients to our body.

  • They contribute to maintenance of the intestinal mucosa and the cells of the gut.

  • They create a mildly acidic intestinal environment which is not favourable to colonisation by harmful pathogens.

  • They train the immune system to deal with harmful pathogens more effectively.

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome commonly have less diverse intestinal flora; that is, there are fewer different species of bacteria. The absence of entire groups of bacteria can result in impairment of certain intestinal functions. For example, this can include maintenance of the intestinal mucosa and the cells of the gut. Moreover, the intestinal flora in patients with irritable bowel syndrome appears to be generally less stable.
